about

After a three-year hiatus Il sogno ("The Dream") is back!
Italian pianist Emanuele Maniscalco (Wurlitzer piano, OB-6 synth), Polish-Danish double bass player Tomo Jacobson and Danish drummer Oliver Laumann join forces again for a very special project commissioned (and entirely funded) by Fondazione del Teatro Grande di Brescia.
Encompassing a wide range of moods, from dreamlike ones (quite fittingly, given the band name) to more throbbing tracks, an original sound identity pervades the entire work – compared to their previous completely acoustic album, this new one leans more towards pop and electronics. Keeping the rhythm section acoustic and adding both an old Wurlitzer and an analog poly synth (instead of an actual piano) allowed Il sogno to create a deep connection between distant worlds.

Album reviews:

Best Recordings Of 2021
(All About Jazz - Mark Corroto - USA)

"The melodies on Graduation waste no time blooming, and all of them are bursting with color."
Featured as 'The Best Jazz on Bandcamp: May 2021'
(Dave Sumner - Bandcamp Daily)

"Exciting trio!"
(Jazz Special #11, 2021 - Allan Sommer)

"A delicious record."
(Jan Granile - Salt Peanuts - Norway)

"The trio fearlessly explores territory between genres. (...) The collective intuition of the trio's artistic sensibilities distinguishes this music."
(David Keffer - Poison Pie Publishing House - USA)

"No lazy magic, but a tickle or mesmerizing pull that draws you away from the extended Hurtigruten."
(Bad Alchemy #111 - Rigobert Dittmann - Germany)

"Den er så vild, den her plade."
(Jazznyt - Niels Overgaard - Denmark)

"Excellent follow up album, (...) fresh, exciting and exploring, and yet entertaining."
(Adam Baruch - Soundtrack of My Life - Poland/Israel)

"Warm & spacious."
'Tune of the day' : Sept 9, 2021
(A Jazz Noise - Dave Foxal - USA)

"Visceral, complex, hyper-realistic album, favoring an enthralling sound based on the ability of the musicians to produce dreamlike energy"
(Roma in Jazz - Fabrizio Ciccarelli - Italy)

"Excellent balance between extemporaneousness and minimalism."
(Musicistanonimo - Italy)

"Among the thousand ideas and melodies that run through the entire recording, the musicians throw a stick of dynamite into the crucible of the narrative again and again, spreading anxiety, sewing improvisations with a nervous stitch. Then they boldly escape into psychedelia, or phrases full of mystery, posing dramatic question marks."
(Spontaneous Music Tribune - Andrzej Nowak - Poland)

"Though the group offers up a stylistic array of tunes in an echo-drenched, beyond-this-Earth mode, it maintains start-to-finish cohesion, in spite of the different styles on compositions. Graduation clocks in at a generous seventy-eight minutes of appealingly modern music that never wears out its welcome."
(All About Jazz - Dan McClenaghan - USA)

"holy shit oh ,yeah o,hwha t this is so g"
(A random person on rateyourmusic dot com)

"Exceptional project"
(SKJazz - Patrick Španko - Slovakia)
